Rating: - better & easier than the genie
I have a 3 week old and have got the genie upstairs and the champ downstairs - both hold off our odors, but the champ is MUCH easier and quicker and quieter to use! I much prefer the champ - wonder which will be better with the odors later as things get bigger, but for now the champ's the one!

We registered for the Diaper Genie, which we received as a shower gift, but were sorely disappointed.... It takes two hands to dispose of a diaper (not an option with a squirming baby on the changing table). I discovered the Diaper Champ at our local Babies R Us (they have one in the mother's room), and was surprised at how easy it was to use. I also figured it must contain smells pretty well since it is used by many mothers with all ages of children. After researching it my husband and I decided to buy one, and ditch the Diaper Genie. We couldn't be happier with it. It can be used with one hand, contains all smells (my son is now 7 months old and has been on solids for the last month, so he is definitely stinky!), but best of all uses any kind of trash bags.... I read other comments that said after a while the seal stops containing the smells, but I am not sure what they are talking about. There isn't a seal, and it doesn't stink if you CLEAN it. Imagine having to clean a diaper pail?! I clean mine with a spray cleaner every time I empty it, and then I spray it with Lysol. I have yet to detect any kind of smell from it, but I imagine I would if I never cleaned it. I also read comments that you need to wear a gas mask to empty it--come on! It's a diaper pail filled with dirty, stinky diapers. What do you expect? In short, I would definitely recommend this product. If it's a choice between this and the Diaper Genie, buy this!
Rating: - The Champ knocks out the Genie!
We used the Diaper Genie for our first child. When we found out we were going to have twins, we thought we'd better rethink how to handle our "waste" issue for a couple of reasons. First, my wife found it somewhat difficult to install the Diaper Genie refills and both of us had trouble getting a consistent clean cut using their cutting tool to remove the bag. Second, the cost of refills at nearly [$$$] a pop really adds up to a lot of money.Thank goodness we saw the Diaper Champ. It is extremely easy to use and saves a ton of money as compared to using the proprietary refills required by the Genie. While you could use plastic grocery or shopping bags to be really thrifty, we found that using the 13-gallon Glad tall kitchen bags with the "Odor Shield" works wonderfully and are very inexpensive by comparison. Even with three kids in diapers, we thought the Champ did a lot better than the Genie in terms of smell. We occasionally spray Lysol on the surfaces to clean and disinfect but we also did that with the Genie. One of the other big advantages of the Champ is its size. By using the 13-gallon Glad trash bags, we found we could go nearly twice as long between bag changes as compared to the Genie. It is also a piece of cake to remove the old bag and put in a new one. I always thought the Genie took too much time when a bag change was needed. If you plan on having one kid, several kids or a even a whole daycare full of kids, the "Champ" is definitely the way to go! If you find the smell ever bothers you, you can easily afford to throw the whole Champ out and buy another one which would still be substantially cheaper than buying those terribly expensive Diaper Genie refills all the time. But the reality is that the Champ works great, smells as good or better than any other diaper pail, and most importantly, saves you both time and money!
