Rating: - Medelas vs. Gerber bags: I vote Medela
While I prefer pumping directly into a bottle, when I'm on the road for a few days, I've found bags far easier to transport, and then freeze and defrost on the return home. Which is how I came to the Gerber vs. Medela "bake off".I ran out of Medela bags a few months ago and could not find a local distributor. I found the Gerber bags in ToysRUs and they looked much easier to use. The Gerber bags have a bottom that flattens out when full, so they sit well on a counter. The Medela bag must be set into a cup/glass on a counter; it can't stand by itself. The Gerber bag's zip lock is also generally easier to seal than the Medela twist-tie seal, and the Gerber bag lies flatter when sealed. However.... The Gerber bags leak through the ziplock top seal about 10% of the time! And they leak through the bottom another 10% of the time! It's awful. I've NEVER had a Medela bag leak! The Medela twisty/rolldown tie is not as easy to seal but it's a tight seal that's for sure. NO leaks! The Gerber bag is also not breastpump friendly. You have to wrap a twist tie or a rubber band around the top of the bag to secure it to the breastmilk collector. Not easy. The Medela bag's twisty tie is used to secure it to the collector and to seal the bag. Much easier. It's quite difficult to pour out of the Gerber bag. It's also not very sanitary. The Medela bag's tear-off bottom is easy to use and very sanitary. (If you use those bottles you put throw-away bags into, you can put the Gerber bag directly into the bottle, which might be handy, but I don't use them myself.) Finally, it's much easier to date (write on) the Medela bag. The leaking bag problem is the main reason I'm switching back to Medela. They're the best!
Rating: - What? Puncture resistant?
I didn't actually purchase these but got I think 25 of them free with my Medela Pump In Style. Love the pump, hated the bags. I've had a few of them come with holes in them. As we all know breastmilk is liquid gold, so these baggies cost me precious milk. Now I just pump into the provided bottles--which I mainly use for storage--then use Gerber freezer bags for freezer storage. The Gerber bags are self-standing and they have a zipper seal, which is so much better than fooling with those stupid twist ties that the Medela bags use. Bottles are much easier to attach to your pump. I hate to say anything bad about Medela, but I wouldn't recommend spending actual money on these by themselves.
Rating: - Durable, easy to use milk storage
I used these bags with my Medela Little Hearts pump and they worked very well. The instructions are very clear and accurate. The bags attach easily with a twist tie to the coupler that normally holds the bottle. Removal from the pump is easy, as is securing them for storage with the twist tie. The bags held up nicely in the freezer and thawed well, too. The method for transferring the milk to a bottle, by tearing a corner of the bag is a bit tricky. Although the instructions didn't say so, I suspect the reason is to keep any contaminates on scissors/knives from transferring to the milk. The first few tries we spilt a bit of the milk, but after a bit of practice it wasn't a problem.
