Rating:  - A good set for any new baby, with reservations
This is a good starter set of baby feeding equipment. The bottles are tough and sturdy and will last long enough for you to step up to the next size. The teats are designed for new born babies and give just the right amount of milk for each suck. They are made from plastic rather than latex so are less prone to shrinkage than others.We have used about four different brands of baby bottles with our baby, and these are the most suitable for the early months. They work very well with either expressed or powdered baby milk, but will need replacing after a couple of months because of the changing feeding habits of the baby. As well as needing more milk, he will also need a different teat. Sadly Avent stuff is so expensive you can buy a whole set of 6 Gerber bottles for the same price as two Avent teats! The bottle brush is useful but it would have been even better if they had made it end in a point (to clean the inside of teats). The dummy (pacifier/soother) works very well - the flattened shape is just right and the breathing holes are a sensible modification to the traditional design. One problem though. When you clean them, water gets stuck inside them and you have to dry them for ages to get it out. The small bottle of baby shampoo/wash is great but far too expensive to buy on a regular basis. Generic products (Equate in U.S., Tesco in U.K.) work just as well for about a tenth of the price. A good starter kit.

I'm surprised at all the negative comments I see regarding this product. We love the Avent bottles! I breastfed my son for the first 2 months and also suplemented with formula. He transitioned between the two wonderfully. Now I'm only formula feeding (he's 3 mo old) and I have not experienced any problems with the bottles. The only formula that seems to foam up in these bottles is Similac - Enfamil and Carnation Good Start do not foam up at all. As for leaking - I only experienced this once and it was because the top was too loose. Don't believe all the negative comments you read. As for nipple flow, Avent offers 4 types of nipples #1 (newborn), #2 (1mo +), #3 (3mo +)& #4 (6mo +) - All bottles when purchased come with #1's and I'm going to buy #3's tomorrow because my son is turning 3mo old and he needs more holes in the nipple to get the amount of milk he desires (the person that commented that they received too much milk through the nipple may not have been using the correct nipple??? The Avent bottles are designed to simulate breastfeeding which, when used correctly, makes the baby suck harder as they do when breastfeeding, plus it strengthens their jaw muscles). I can't speak for everyone but I would highly recommend these bottles, my son does wonderfully with them.
Rating:  - MAJOR DRIBBLING PROBLEMS!
Like many parents, we were lured by Avent's promise to prevent colic. So as soon as we realized we needed to bottle-feed (my daughter didn't take the breast), we went out and bought about a dozen Avent bottles, both disposable & reusable. For the next two months, our baby DRIBBLED LIKE CRAZY!!! We always had to have multiple bibs & burping cloths on hand to catch all the excess milk that constantly dribbled from the sides of her mouth (all that precious breastmilk, wasted!) We ignorantly assumed she just had problems sucking since she couldn't suckle at the breast, until someone suggested we try a different bottle.HALLELUJAH! Every other brand we tried that had a narrower nipple shape worked MUCH better; we barely even needed bibs anymore when feeding her! In addition, she seemed to have less gas, maybe because it was easier for her to form a suction with her mouth on the smaller nipple. And I'm not the only one; at least two other parents I know had the same problem with their babies & Avent nipples. Consequently, I STRONGLY recommend that you just buy a couple bottles first and try it out before spending an arm & a leg on these over-priced bottles. Maybe our babies just don't know how to suck, but the shape of the nipple obviously doesn't work for everyone. By the way, I ended up trying at least 5 other brands, and I liked[ another bottle] best...Now, if only I could figure out what to do with all these extra Avent bottles...
