Average Rating: Rating: - mesh portion of gate not durable I bought this gate for two reasons - it was wide enough to stretch across my hallway and it was portable. On those two points, it has been more than adequate. It is spring mounted, meaning you adjust the width of the gate, squeeze the rods together (doing the top and botton rods independently), then release the rods when they are in position. They spring back out, holding them in position. It has removed some of the paint on a portion of my wall but I put up and take down the gates everyday and plan on re-painting so I haven't been that careful. It's easy to use and convenient. That said, I do have a complaint about the mesh portion. My small sized toddler has already torn through the mesh once and she was only leaning up against the gate with her knee against the mesh. She hasn't even tried to climb the gate yet. I wouldn't recommend this product be used near stairs. I think it would do rather well for small pets though - so long as their nails don't get caught in the mesh. Rating: - The Ultimate Gate! As residents of a multilevel, many-doored home which includes decks and a number of staircases, we have searched high and low for gates which could accomodate large and/or uneven openings. This gate is the absolute best! We probably bought one of every other gate made before finding this one.. and we are now replacing all of the others with these. As others have noted, it is NOT safe for tops of staircases (although we have had excellent success with it at the bottom) since it relies on tension to stay in place. However, once correctly installed (as easy as putting up a shower curtain rod, by the way) it takes my husband to budge it by pushing! It is incredibly easy to uninstall/reinstall; you simply screw it open or closed - and the ability to open the top and bottom rails independently enabled us to use it on spaces with baseboard heating elements 4" wide at the bottom, and still get a secure fit on top! It's portable, easily cleaned, unbelievably sturdy... in short, the best gate made. Buy two! Rating: - Not a Convenient Gate! The doorway I bought this gate for ended up being too wide. But no problem, I thought I could just use it at the top of our stairs leading to the basement. And this is when I realized the many flaws. If you don't ever need to take the gate down,there is no problem.But, that's not very likely since it's so tall. You adjust the gate to the doorway, then turn the top and bottom bars on one side to tighten. This is a huge pain.If you put the bottom bar directly on floor ,it's a real pain trying to turn and adjust the bar.If you lift the gate so it's a couple inches off the floor there's a danger. I've caught my daughter sitting on the bar several times. She thinks it's so fun to lean back in the mesh also. This is so frightening, it's hard not to imagine her weight pushing the gate to the floor or pushing it backwards down the stairs.Thank goodness she's not a climber, I'm sure she would love to stand on the bar too.Also, I have never needed to wash the mesh. I think it's just as easy to wipe a plastic one clean.This gate seemed like a good idea but just isn't worth the effort to take down and put back up. I do not reccommend it for use near stairs.
